I was only 12, probably way too young for such a movie, but my parents were pretty liberal about what I was allowed to see, if they even knew what it was. Regardless, it scared the utter crap out of me. Critics liked it for the most part. The movie celebrates its 25th anniversary on Monday, and it has grown in stature over that time. But the whole psychology — and spirituality — of the film is tormenting.
The premise of both the original and this newest version starts the same. The titular character Jacob is a war veteran suffering through bouts of post-traumatic stress. When Jacob begins to see ghastly visions and bizarre hallucinations that continue to haunt him, he seeks to find the answers to what he is seeing. In the original film, Jacob was played by actor Tim Robbins who was a war vet turned postal worker living in New York City. The updated version directed by David M.
In the process, director David M. As he investigates further, he begins to question everything about his own reality. Ealy gives a sympathetic performance, and the existential mysteries underlying this story remain beguiling.
