The novel was first published in Sweden in , and was translated into English by Laurie Thompson in A nineteen-year-old woman, Jeanette Bielke, is raped whilst walking home during the night. Inspector Winter is perturbed when he realises that the rape occurred in exactly the same spot as a similar crime, which in this case ended in murder, five years ago.

School is out, and parks and beaches are teeming with people. The sun sets late and rises early so far north, and with only a few hours of night there is little reprieve from the oppressive heat. Chief Inspector Erik Winter, now forty-one and a father but as brooding and mercurial as ever, assembles the scant, grisly details of the crimes and begins to see an eerie connection to a five-year-old unsolved case, one that he, in typically obsessive fashion, has refused to let go cold. Has the same rapist reemerged to taunt the police and flaunt his stolen freedom, or are these copycat crimes? In the absence of any hard leads, and haunted by the case he could not solve, Winter desperately hunts for a link bridging the victims, convinced that each crime holds the key to the others.
