Having a chronic illness sucks. It sucked when I was first diagnosed as a college freshman, and it sucks today as a year-old woman. Except instead of getting to lie on the bathroom floor, I have to go to work. I even had my colon removed!
Sometimes, when I talk to teens, they tell me that teen life sucks. It is sad to hear them say that at a time in their lives that is supposed to be wonderful, interesting and exciting. The teenage years are when they form their identity and it is sad to hear that they came to the conclusion that teen life sucks.

There are countless other such habits, such as hair-pulling, but recreating the familiar is what is common to all 'self-soothing' behaviours. Some behaviours do not actually soothe but instead amplify the distressed feeling, and it is these that deserve special attention by the parents, carers and early years practitioners.
